Defend Yourself against a Personal Injury Lawsuit | Charon QC

Defend Yourself against a Personal Injury Lawsuit
By Denver Burke

?

Accidents do happen, and sometimes, the injured party can point the finger at you. And because no-one wants to find themselves with a lawsuit on their hands, it?s good to be prepared. You can dramatically reduce your risk of being forced to pay out vast sums of money by soliciting advice from a personal injury lawyer. However, we?ve compiled some tips for you:

Take Pictures

Even if you don?t take your camera with you everywhere, most people have a lens on their phone. Always take pictures of the scene where the accident took place. This is singularly important if you?re involved in a motor-related incident, otherwise you may be accused of something that wasn?t your fault, with no solid evidence to show your innocence.

Err On The Cautious Side

Particularly when it comes to car accidents, you better hope that your vehicle is up-to-date on all its safety checks and is 100% road worthy. If you?re involved in a motor accident and your car isn?t up-to-scratch, you may be accused of liability. With a properly maintained vehicle and sensible driving, you?re very unlikely to get suckered into a personal injury lawsuit, but nevertheless it should still act as a strong deterrent against careless or even wreckless driving. ?

?Get In Touch With Your Insurance Company

?When you?ve been in a traffic accident, you should get in contact with your insurance company as soon as possible. Insurance normally covers your legal fees too. Being quick about reporting the incident always works in your favour.?

Due Diligence

If you are responsible for others, then sticking to the health and safety guidelines is a must. Keeping everyone secure should be your main priority, as it could end up reflecting badly on you in a court of law, if you didn?t do everything humanly possible to keep your charges out of harm?s reach.

Around the workplace, this may mean teaching employees how to lift objects safely, clearing up mess, and making sure everyone knows where the fire exits are. Without taking these precautions, you could be found liable for their injuries. If you?re in any doubt about which health and safety guidelines you have to adhere to, contact solicitors in Ellesmere Port for further information.

Personal Property

Possibly one of the most unbelievable ways someone can take you to court is if they injure themselves on your personal property. You can avoid this by having a routine inspection of your grounds for any legal hazards. Better yet, make sure that your personal property is insured against such events. Or you can just build an impenetrable fortress around your land.?

Emergency Services

If you find someone injured, always call emergency services, even if the person doesn?t appear to be too harmed, or at least offer to find a way to transport them to the hospital. It?s better to be safe than sorry. If you are shown to have done everything possibly to make sure the injured party received medical attention, it always counts in your favour. Be the nice guy/gal.

Re: Old Injury. New State - Workers Compensation Insurance . com

My workers compensation claim was made in the State of: Texas

Hello, I'm Bryan and new to the forum...

Hopefully someone can help me. It would be much appreciated!

In 1992 I was a bricklayer and fell from a scaffold about 7 feet. I fell on my back hitting the concrete. Hit my hips first, then my head. Ended up with lower back problems and a closed head injury, which both, for the most part have healed. I would throw my back out fairly often, which I never did before the accident. Took 2 years to get my head back on strait....

Forward to today... I have had constant lower back pain for 13 months now. It just won't get better. I called Texas Workers Comp. and they did say if my current pain is due to the '92 injury, the claim would kick back in.

Here's my problem: I need to see a doctor to see if this pain is due to the past injury, but I now live in Washington State. I have been unemployed for sometime now. No insurance for the last 4 years. I need to find a doctor here who is certified (i suppose) for Texas Workers Comp. Of course, not having insurance or job makes it even harder.

Any suggestions? Thanks for reading!
Bryan

Thanks for the memories, Forrest Griffin

The retirement of a UFC pioneer happened this weekend as Forrest Griffin, the original winner of "The Ultimate Fighter," announced his retirement at UFC 160. His career with the UFC had an effect on the sport, but also an effect on me.

I watched the UFC at different wrestling parties in high school. A dear friend in college would watch fights with me when we didn't feel like hitting the bar scene. I heard about the career of Matt Hughes, this wrestling coach I once knew, but that's it. I followed wrestling like a hawk, but I didn't know the names and stories of the MMA competitors.

"The Ultimate Fighter" changed that. Josh Koscheck, the friend of a wrestling friend, had been chosen to be on a reality show. If he won it, he'd be in the UFC. Since Josh -- as we knew him before he was Kos -- was on the show, my friends and I wanted it to succeed. We tuned in every week and discussed the episodes by email. It was liveblogging before we knew what liveblogging was.

Though Koscheck took center stage for his antics, it was the wisecracking Griffin who stood out to me. He was funny and smart, and despite his love of being punched in the face, refreshingly normal. He showed that fighters weren't meatheads who could talk about nothing but fighting. Griffin became the fighter I wanted to see succeed.

He did, making it to the finale in a bout against Stephan Bonnar. I watched the first "Ultimate Fighter" finale on a 16-inch television in my grandmother's kitchen. I couldn't believe what was happening on that tiny screen. Neither Griffin nor Bonnar would give an inch. They threw together an unbelievable bout.

Was it technically perfect? Nah. Both fighters had plenty to learn about how to throw an efficient punch or how to get a takedown. It didn't matter. Though they were both bloodied, they fought through until the final bell.

This was before Twitter and Facebook were everywhere. I had no idea if other people were watching, but I was, and I was hooked. Griffin and Bonnar and Koscheck and Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez made me care about them. Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell made me want to find the closest bar to watch them fight. I started following MMA more closely, until I wanted an outlet to write about the sport. I started my own site, which led me to covering the Olympics and MMA here on Yahoo! Sports.

Now, with Forrest Griffin walking away from the sport, I have to take a second to say thank you. He may not have realized the effect he had on MMA when he was swinging at Stephan Bonnar, but it was profound.

ICC prosecutor: Kenya must prove it could handle Kenyatta case

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The International Criminal Court's (ICC) chief prosecutor said on Thursday that Kenya must prove it would "genuinely" conduct proceedings against President Uhuru Kenyatta for alleged crimes against humanity if it wants the court to drop his case.

Kenya has asked the tribunal to refer its case against Kenyatta back to the east African country, a move that has been backed by other African Union nations.

Kenyatta and his deputy, William Ruto, are facing trial at the ICC, accused of masterminding ethnic bloodshed in post-election violence five years ago that killed more than 1,200 people. Both deny the charges.

Kenyatta's trial is due to begin in July. Both he and Ruto have promised to cooperate with the ICC.

"A state wishing to conduct national proceedings has to satisfy the judges that it is genuinely conducting proceedings against the same persons for the same crimes," ICC Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said.

Kenyan officials concede the country has not in the past had the ability to try suspects accused of crimes against humanity, but say its reformed judiciary now does.

The country is in the process of setting up special courts for trying crimes against humanity.

"The office of the prosecutor stands ready to engage in any legal debate regarding its ongoing cases in Kenya," Bensouda said.

The prosecutor's office has always insisted the ICC trial of Kenyatta must proceed. The Hague-based court has no jurisdiction over crimes if national authorities are carrying out a credible investigation and trial.

The court was set up a decade ago to hold accountable perpetrators of the very worst crimes against humanity and war crimes, but some feel Africa has been unfairly targeted, making the court deeply unpopular across the continent.

CNN veteran Larry King to host Kremlin-funded TV show

MOSCOW (Reuters) - CNN veteran Larry King will host a new show on Kremlin-funded TV station Russia Today next month, RT said on Wednesday.

The English-language station, beamed to 630 million viewers worldwide, said it would launch "Politics with Larry King" in June.

The show will be produced by Ora TV, an online broadcaster founded by King and Mexican telecoms tycoon Carlos Slim last year, and recorded in RT America's Washington, DC, studio and Ora TV's Los Angeles studio.

RT said it also signed a deal to air the online talk show "Larry King Now", which has been hosted by web broadcasters Hulu.com and Ora.tv since last July. The U.S. branch will be the exclusive broadcaster for both programmes, it said.

"Whether a president or an activist or a rock star was sitting across from him, Larry King never shied away from asking the tough questions, which makes him a terrific fit for our network," said RT's editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan.

RT and Ora TV declined to comment on King's salary in the deal.

Russia Today - considered a Kremlin exercise in image enhancement by critics - received 11 billion roubles ($349 million) from the state this year. It signed Wikileaks founder Julian Assange last year to host his own talk show.

King, 79, ended a 25-year run as the host of "Larry King Live" on CNN in 2010. He had interviewed Russian President Vladimir Putin several times over his 13-year rule.

RT also made headlines in 2011 when U.S. airports refused to put up one of its controversial advertisements.

The billboards comparing U.S. President Barack Obama and Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with a tagline asking, "Who poses the greater nuclear threat?" did appear at airports across Europe.

Space Diving: Iron Man Meets Star Trek Suit In Development

If the astronaut moved her/his leg the wrong way, it could be melted off by the jets. Then what will (s)he do?

Why, scream, of course.
But as we all know, in space, no one....

The problem, in my limited understanding, is that any "suit" sturdy enough to support re-entry will in reality be a capsule. Even if it has dividers for arms and legs. With today's technology, it's going to be a far cry from "free flight", and more like going over the Niagara falls in a steel barrel. Some would want to, but I doubt it would be very enjoyable.

Comcast's X1 remote app gains voice commands on iOS, Android update in the works

Comcast's X1 remote app gains voice commands on iOS, Android update in the works

A little added interactiveness with living room essentials goes a long way. With that in mind, Comcast today announced it's boosting its iOS X1 remote control with newly minted voice commands, something the company's been working on since earlier this year. Xfinity TV subscribers using the X1 platform will now be able to search for content by (quietly) shouting different vocal orders at the application, including, but not limited to, things like "Record," "Watch Gossip Girl" or "Find the Yankees game." While the new feature is only available on iOS at the moment, Comcast says its devs and engineers are "also working on voice control features for Android phones and for traditional remote controls." The X1 app update doesn't appear to be live just yet, but be sure to keep an eye on the App Store as it should be arriving pretty soon.

Internet's Annual Report Card Shows China's Rise | MIT Technology ...

The latest version of venture capitalist Mary Meeker?s Internet Trends report arrived this morning, and some of the most interesting of her 117 slides are about the scale and growth of Internet use and businesses in China.

Both Meeker?s full slide presentation, and a video of her talk at the D11 conference are available online. Here are a few interesting points about the Internet and China from her slides:

  • More people in China now access the Web using their phone (75 percent) than with a desktop PC (71 percent). The crossing point was just last year.
  • Internet and mobile use take up more of leisure time in China (33 percent and 22 percent of leisure time, respectively) than in the U.S. (26 percent for Internet and 12 percent for mobile use).
  • In the past year, Twitter-style Chinese social network Sina Weibo has doubled its userbase to 530 million and grown income from roughly zero to $100 million.
  • Alibaba.com ? an online retailer serving businesses and more recently consumers, too ? is bigger than Amazon and Ebay combined, in terms of gross merchandise volume.
  • QR codes are growing in popularity, fast, as a way to connect mobile devices to online content, and for ticketing and payments. Meeker reports that use of QR codes is up four times since march 2012, and shows a striking photo of the UK embassy in Beijing, emblazoned with a giant QR code right next to its front gate, a link to the outpost?s social media account.

One consequence of rapid rise in Internet use for business and pleasure in China can be seen in Meeker?s slide below (it?s number six in her presentation), which rounds up the world?s ten largest Internet properties. Eight are from the U.S., and the other two China?s leading search engine, Baidu, and social network, Tencent.

Those companies made the top ten due to the vast size of China?s population, not by being global players. But as giants like Tencent and Baidu start to run out of new people to sign up within China?s borders, they will likely begin to look abroad. Expect Chinese companies to take up more of those top ten slots in future Meeker presentations.

Tax overhaul: IRS scandal could lead to changes

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite, File)

(AP) ? The Internal Revenue Service's targeting of conservative political groups has little if anything to do with most everyday taxpayers, but some lawmakers are hoping attention to the budding scandal will swell public and political support for rewriting and simplifying a federal tax code that has undergone some 5,000 changes in the past dozen years.

"The complexity of the law didn't require the IRS to target people for their political beliefs," said Rep. David Camp, the Michigan Republican who chairs the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. But, he added, "I think giving the IRS less discretion is going to be important, and that's what a simplified code would do."

Most taxpayers now pay someone to do their taxes or buy commercial software to help them file. In a report earlier this year, national taxpayer advocate Nina E. Olson ranked complexity as the most serious problem facing both taxpayers and the IRS. People simply trying to comply with the rules often make inadvertent errors and overpay or underpay, she said. Others, she added, "often find loopholes that enable them to reduce or eliminate their tax liabilities."

Camp and his Democratic counterpart in the Senate, Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus of Montana, have been working for months on what would be the first major tax overhaul since 1986. At nearly 4 million words, Camp likes to say the current code is "10 times the size of the Bible with none of the good news."

Lawmakers in both parties say the current storm buffeting the IRS underscores how overly complex tax provisions have given the agency too much discretion in interpreting and enforcing the law.

"This is the perfect example of why we need tax reform," said Rep. Tim Griffin, R-Ark., a member of the Ways and Means Committee. "If you want to diminish and limit the power of the IRS, you have got to reduce the complexity of the tax code and take them out of it."

There are formidable obstacles to completing a major tax overhaul this year or next. Both parties say they want to cut overall tax rates by getting rid of tax breaks but they disagree on whether more revenues should be part of the equation. And for all the work Camp and Baucus have done, they have yet to answer hard questions about which tax breaks to scrap.

Americans like their credits, deductions and exemptions ? the provisions that make the tax law so complicated in the first place. In exchange for lower tax rates, would workers be willing to pay taxes on employer-provided health benefits or on contributions to their retirement plans? How would homeowners feel about losing the mortgage interest deduction?

Those are among the three biggest tax breaks in the tax code, according to congressional estimates, together saving taxpayers nearly $300 billion this year.

The IRS scandal erupted a little over two weeks ago when the agency revealed that agents assigned to a special team in Cincinnati had targeted tea party and other conservative groups for additional, often burdensome scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status. The targeting lasted more than 18 months during the 2010 and 2012 election campaigns, hindering the groups' ability to raise money, according to a report by the agency's inspector general.

Since then, two top IRS have officials lost their jobs, and a third has been placed on paid administrative leave. Investigations by Congress and the Justice Department are under way.

The IRS was screening the groups' applications because agents were trying to determine their level of political activity. IRS regulations say tax-exempt social welfare organizations may engage in some political activity but the activity may not be their primary mission. It is a vague standard that agents struggled to apply, according to the inspector general's report. Lawmakers in both parties have complained for years that overtly political groups on the left and right have taken advantage of the rules to claim tax-exempt status and hide the identities of their donors.

"There are countless political organizations at both ends of the spectrum masquerading as social welfare groups in order to skirt the tax code," Baucus said. "Once the smoke of the current controversy clears, we need to examine the root of this issue and reform the nation's vague tax laws pertaining to these groups."

Some Republicans hope to use an upcoming debate over increasing the federal government's borrowing authority to trigger action on tax change. The government is expected to reach the borrowing limit by early fall, raising the possibility of another debt standoff like the one in 2011 that brought it to the brink of default.

Details are fluid, but congressional aides have been working on mechanisms to streamline the process of passing a tax package, in exchange for raising the debt ceiling, perhaps guaranteeing floor votes on bills approved by the tax-writing committees in the House and Senate.

President Barack Obama, however, has said he won't negotiate over raising the debt ceiling.

Obama has called for an overhaul of corporate taxes, and he laid some groundwork to accomplish that in his latest budget proposal. He also has said he wants to do comprehensive tax reform as part of a broad budget deal that cuts spending and reformulates entitlement programs. Such a grand bargain has proven elusive.

Camp and Baucus say they are open to a process that links tax reform to the debt ceiling. But Baucus warns: "I don't want to be part of something that's political or partisan. But I do want to be part of something that's practical and pragmatic that looks like it's going to advance the ball."

Baucus, who has been in the Senate since 1978, announced in April he won't run for re-election in 2014. He said he will focus much of his remaining time in the Senate on trying to steer a tax package through Congress.

Camp says he is committed to passing a tax bill out of his committee by the end of the year. There is no guarantee the full House would take up the bill, but Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has signaled his support for the effort by reserving the prestigious bill number HR 1 for a tax overhaul measure.

Lawmakers in both parties are convinced that simpler, easier-to-understand tax laws would spur economic activity. But there are significant partisan differences.

The Republican recipe calls for reducing or eliminating tax breaks that benefit targeted taxpayers, and using all the additional revenue to reduce overall rates for everyone. The tax system would raise about the same amount of money, but businesses could focus on being more efficient instead of trying to take advantage of targeted tax breaks, supporters say.

Obama and Democratic leaders in Congress also want to reduce or eliminate various tax breaks. Overall income tax rates would be lower, but the wealthy would pay more each year because they would lose certain exemptions, deductions and credits.

::C.PRO DES!GNS:: ? Actual estate management

Real estate management companies making life easier

Owning a home sometimes happens for different reasons. Because you need a house for yourself (that house of one?s goals that you so badly need) you could spend money on real estate. Real estate could be used by you as a way for supplementing your earnings either by selling at an increased price and getting at a diminished price or by letting it out. Sometimes you might purchase a property for the purpose of resale but might want to wait for many years before you actually sell it. In such a case, again it would sound right to book the house and earn some funds until you really decide to sell it off.

Regardless of the cause, making out real estate requirements real estate management and real estate management isn?t an easy problem for everybody. In reality, a great deal of people find it so much of a headache they prefer keeping their house bare rather than letting it. Real estate management requirements time, that you simply will rarely have. Property management isn?t nearly acquiring tenants and collecting rent from their website. Real estate management can be about ensuring that you do all the tasks that a landlord/landlady must do. Real estate management is approximately verifying the qualifications of the tenants before your property is actually let out by you for them. Property management is about ensuring that most of the paper work is full and correct i.e. the tenancy agreement etc are properly done. Real-estate management also requires you to do repairs as and when needed. Real estate management activities also include preservation, painting, polishing and so on of the house once the tenants re-locate and before the new tenants get in. Therefore, really, property management isn?t that simple a job for anyone who?s in a complete time job. Nevertheless, there is a solution to the and that is hiring a genuine estate management firm to complete every one of these actions for you. Yes, this will mean that what you receive being an income by letting your premises will be reduced (because of the commission/ fee charged by the real estate management company). But that?s only a small cost for the convenience that a genuine estate management company gives to you. But, its important that you pick the property management company carefully. There are all kinds of real-estate management companies out there (good and bad). You should examine the sources of the real estate management firm before you actually hire them for the job. A great real estate management company will not only keep your premises occupied constantly but will also make sure that you always have the rent in time and without the headache. The Law Offices of Gregory T. Ancient plants reawaken: Plants exposed by retreating glaciers regrowing after centuries entombed under ice

May 28, 2013 ? When University of Alberta researcher Catherine La Farge threads her way through the recently exposed terrain left behind by retreating glaciers, she looks at the ancient plant remains a lot closer than most. Now, her careful scrutiny has revealed a startling reawakening of long-dormant plants known as bryophytes.

La Farge, a researcher in the Faculty of Science, and director and curator of the Cryptogamic Herbarium at the University of Alberta, has overturned a long-held assumption that all of the plant remains exposed by retreating polar glaciers are dead. Previously, any new growth of plants close to the glacier margin was considered the result of rapid colonization by modern plants surrounding the glacier.

Using radiocarbon dating, La Farge and her co-authors confirmed that the plants, which ranged from 400 to 600 years old, were entombed during the Little Ice Age that happened between 1550 and 1850. In the field, La Farge noticed that the subglacial populations were not only intact, but also in pristine condition -- with some suggesting regrowth.

In the lab, La Farge and her master's student Krista Williams selected 24 subglacial samples for culture experiments. Seven of these samples produced 11 cultures that successfully regenerated four species from the original parent material.

La Farge says the regrowth of these Little Ice Age bryophytes (such as mosses and liverworts) expands our understanding of glacier ecosystems as biological reservoirs that are becoming increasingly important with global ice retreat. "We know that bryophytes can remain dormant for many years (for example, in deserts) and then are reactivated, but nobody expected them to rejuvenate after nearly 400 years beneath a glacier.

"These simple, efficient plants, which have been around for more than 400 million years, have evolved a unique biology for optimal resilience," she adds. "Any bryophyte cell can reprogram itself to initiate the development of an entire new plant. This is equivalent to stem cells in faunal systems."

La Farge says the finding amplifies the critical role of bryophytes in polar environments and has implications for all permafrost regions of the globe.

"Bryophytes are extremophiles that can thrive where other plants don't, hence they play a vital role in the establishment, colonization and maintenance of polar ecosystems. This discovery emphasizes the importance of research that helps us understand the natural world, given how little we still know about polar ecosystems -- with applied spinoffs for understanding reclamation that we may never have anticipated."

The research was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Highland Park parents raising funds for a computer-wise school ...

Aldama computer lab/Courtesy Janelle McGlothlin

The computer lab at Aldama Elementary in Highland Park is packed with 33 aging and overloaded computers that keep crashing. Not only is the Highland Park school in need of new machines, its teachers also need help showing them how best to use? computers and technology to complement their classroom lessons. That?s why a group of Aladma parents and supporters are on a mission to upgrade the computer lab and raise $20,000 by August to to hire a computer-savvy, full-time instructor for the center.

?Despite the huge emphasis on technology, our public schools are seriously behind in infrastructure,? said Aldama parent Janelle McGlothlin. ?It?s 100% incumbent on the teacher to take their 25-30 students into the lab and create a lesson plan for them. If you?re not super computer savvy, that?s a really tough undertaking.?

In addition to getting more powerful computers donated from corporations, school supporters are also seeking? funds to hire a full-time teacher for the computer lab who will develop lesson plans tailored to different ages of students and also work with teachers to integrate technology more broadly into their classroom lessons. It?s part of an L.A. Unified program called ComputerWise Kids, which costs $43,000 a year to operate.

The Highland Park school has already committed $20,000 to the program, and parents and supporters are trying to raise the balance before August with a June 1 Bites for Bytes fundraiser featuring A Taste of Highland Park.

In addition to Bites for Bytes, the Aldama parents have also applied for corporate grants and have approached other donors, said McGlothlin. ?We could do fewer days for less money, but that would mean some kids would miss out.?

Kindergarten teacher Lacey Jung explains the importance of keeping the school computers and computer education up to date:

It is so important for all of our students to be equipped with strong computer experiences and literacy skills from a young age. The world is so technologically different than it was 20 years ago, ten years ago, five years ago, one year ago ? Our children will soon be entering higher educational experiences and work places dependent on technology that is not yet available to us.

It is so important for us as a school community to recognize the need for rigorous computer education and to begin to give our students the tools and critical thinking skills needed in order to be successful in grappling and mastering these future technologies. The introduction and strong emphasis on computer education and literacy for all of our students is our responsibility as a school. It is imperative in moving our children into the 21st century.

The Bites for Bytes fundraiser will be held on June 1. Click here for details.

Embattled Mayor Ford says media distorting the facts, he doesn't like ...

As the allegations against Ourtown Mayor Freddy Ford continue to dominate headlines, The Daily Dad caught up with the mayor between meetings for this exclusive interview. Following is the transcript of Daily Dad?s conversation with the embattled mayor.

Daily Dad: Mr. Mayor. How are you? Can I get a minute?

Mayor: It?s fine. All fine. How is the family? Are you still doing the Africa thing, still going back and forth? I didn?t see you at our last barbecue.

Daily Dad: Yes, sir, still doing it. Back and forth. The family is fine. Thanks for asking. You know, a few little adjustments with the kids. They go through a lot with all the travel, but they?re pretty tough.

Mayor: Well, I?m glad for that. What can I do for you today?

Daily Dad: It?s the allegations, Mr. Mayor. On the Coke issue. And everything else. Your aids are leaving in droves. The allegations on your family?s drug past. There?s a lot happening.

Mayor: Look, the fine people of Ourtown know how to look through media manipulation of the facts and as far as I?m concerned it?s business as usual.

Daily Dad: In all respect, your previous denial of ever using Coke wasn?t very clear. Can you tell The Daily Dad definitively now? It?might help everyone understand. Not if you think of yourself as an addict or not, but if you?ve? ever used Coke.?Do you, in fact, need help?

Mayor: The truth of the matter is that I don?t drink any soft drinks of any kind.

Daily Dad: None? Ever?

Mayor: Well, come on, you?re a dad. I don?t know what you exactly give your kids to drink, but have you ever seen the science on that stuff? All that sodium nitrate and toxins and crap? Rats roll over dead when they?re given Coke. I just don?t get involved with it. ?What?s over there to drink in Africa, anyway?

Daily Dad: Well, sure, there are soft drinks like Coke. And we have milk there, but some days it?s not fit to give to the cat. It?s good to be back home for the milk here, for sure. But, back to you, sir. You?ve never had a little Coke? Ever? What about this alleged video?

Mayor: Listen, the only thing I drink is water. I prefer water because it?s such a good cleanser for the liver. And that helps with regularity, you know what I mean? I drink a glass before each meal, which is also good because then I eat less. It?s just a great way to diet.?I drink it during meetings too, and after my daily run, and then in the evening with my vitamins. I?ve been doing this for a long time, this formula, which is an easy way to get eight to ten glasses in every day. This is the real story, the one that nobody is bothering with.

Daily Dad: Mr. Mayor, what about the reports in the national media about your family?s well-known past with street drugs?

Mayor: Sure, this has all been hard on my family. We?re people. We have feelings. We?ve worked hard for Ourtown and this has really hit us hard. I won?t deny that. But something is really wrong, really, really, really?wrong, when things fall to this level, when some internet gossip site can raise the kind of money it has from hard working people to buy a non-existent video with all that money going where? To drug dealers! Holy Cow, Dad, it?s all just a bit too much, don?t you think? I mean does anyone think drug dealers should be supported like this? And now my family?s supposed history?

Daily Dad: But what about this pot, even?in the past. The whole country is now reading about it, the pot.

Mayor: Let me ask you something. Have you ever had any pot? I mean just a little? Have you ever had a little pot?

Daily Dad: Are you asking me, or admitting you?ve had a little pot yourself?

Mayor: I?m saying that I like flowers as much as the next guy. And I had a little pot once. It was a little black and brown and green pot. And I put an African violet ? you can relate to African violets ? in this pot and then I put it by the window and someone saw it. They liked the pot and wanted to buy the pot. It was in my younger years and I wasn?t the only one ? sure there were friends and family and plenty of others involved. This sort of pot was good for all sorts of people who are into flowers, everyday people just wanting to brighten up their days a bit with something fresh in the home or office.

Daily Dad: Is this what you?re saying, that it was all a flower business?

Mayor: What I?m saying is that the media can?t be trusted anymore. It distorts all the facts, which is why we?re all, in fact, experiencing the implosion of the media as we know it. Nobody trusts the morning news for the weather anymore. Too many other places to get our facts, our truth, from. Tell me I?m wrong. Tell me the media always gets it right. Tell me that everyone loves you and that you?re all just in booming times these days.

Daily Dad: Well, sure, it?s pretty hard to keep on top of it all, all the tweeting and YouTubing on top of your regular work, and then keeping all those facts straight too. Newspapers are doing a lot more with a lot less. Sure. It?s not easy.

Mayor: How are you doing over there with it all, anyway?

Daily Dad: Well, we?re down to a staff of one now.

Mayor: Just one, eh? Don?t know you do it. Good for you, though.?What about that old press? Are you still selling it?

Daily Dad: Maybe.

Mayor: Would you take five bucks?

Daily Dad: I was thinking twenty.

Mayor: Listen, Dad, my advice is this. Don?t get too excited about too much. Truth, like I was saying, isn?t what it once was. It?s like love, you know? It?s?in the eye of the beholder. And if you want to, say, give your kids a bit of Coke, I personally won?t hold it against you. And neither would plenty of others. My preference is water. Someone else prefers Coke. I mean, what?s the big deal? What you do in the privacy of your personal life is just that: private and personal. If we can all agree on this, we?d all find things go a lot smoother. This is what you need to tell your readers.?I hope this all helps clarify things.?I do have to go now. Do say hello to the family. And keep that press for me. You know I love antiques.

Daily Dad: Yes, okay, thank you, Mr. Mayor.

One in 600 Flights Involves Medical Emergency, Study Says - Health ...

closecall One in 600 Flights Involves Medical Emergency, Study Says

By Maureen Salamon
HealthDay Reporter

WEDNESDAY, May 29 (HealthDay News) ? Medical emergencies occur daily on commercial airline flights, and physician passengers end up providing assistance during nearly half of such midair incidents, according to a new study.

Combing through records of nearly 12,000 in-flight medical emergency calls from five commercial airlines, researchers found that one emergency occurred for every 604 flights, but only 7.3 percent of such flights required a diverted landing to an alternate destination.

Dizziness or fainting were the most common midair medical problems, followed by respiratory symptoms, nausea or vomiting, and heart symptoms. Ill fliers ranged in age from 2 weeks to 100 years.

?Most medical emergencies can be handled with a simple onboard medical kit, and often a health care provider is on board,? said study author Dr. Christian Martin-Gill, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. ?And in all situations we describe, there was consultation with a ground-based physician with experience with in-flight emergencies. This allowed us to gain a very wide view of the types of emergencies encountered on aircraft, and specifically what the outcomes are for passengers.?

For the study, published May 30 in the New England Journal of Medicine, Martin-Gill and his colleagues examined records of in-flight medical calls over nearly three years from five domestic and international airlines to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center?s STAT-MD Communications Center, a 24-hour, physician-directed command center.

Most of the passengers treated in-flight had favorable results. One-quarter were transported to a hospital after landing, about 9 percent were admitted and only 0.3 percent died either onboard the aircraft or during transport to a hospital. The most common causes for hospital admission were stroke, respiratory or cardiac symptoms.

In addition to the 48 percent of emergencies attended to by physician passengers, medical professionals such as nurses provided help in another 28 percent of cases, the investigators found.

Dr. Paulo Alves, president of the Airlines Medical Directors Association, praised these good Samaritans for their contributions. ?We?re thrilled that medical personnel have an avid interest in learning and volunteering during in-flight medical events,? said Alves, who was not involved in the research. ?Their assistance and support is of great value to the flying public, airlines, crew members and the ground-based medical staff.?

Martin-Gill said the research underscored the notion that most midair medical emergencies can be managed by flight attendants, who are trained in emergency protocols and have access to a U.S. Federal Aviation Administration-required emergency medical kit. Ground-based physician consultants provide additional guidance, he said, and assist the crew in determining if the plane requires diverting.

?What we hope to do is gain a better understanding of how we can manage specific emergencies,? Martin-Gill said. ?On a national scale, certainly we would support an evidence-based look at what should be included in the contents of medical kits.?

MIcrosoft ASUS Tablet Vs. iPad Ad - Business Insider

Ad

Microsoft's ASUS ViviTab Smart Tablet

Microsoft changed an ad that claimed its new ASUS VivoTab Smart tablet was bigger than an iPad after a blogger claimed that the math Microsoft used in the ad was wrong.

As reported by Elliot Temple in his blog, Curi, Microsoft made a side-by-side comparison of the two tablets implying that the ASUS screen was larger since its diagonal measurement is longer. Microsoft used this diagram to make its point, Temple says:

You don't have to be Euclid to know that that is not a mathematical truth. A rectangle can be longer diagonally but still enclose a smaller area.

What is particularly deceptive about the graphic, Temple claimed, is that it was not rendered to scale: "Microsoft has drawn a 10.1 inch tablet 36% larger than a 9.7 inch tablet."

In actuality, an iPad's screen size is 7.76 by 5.82 inches while the ASUS screen is?8.8 by 4.95 inches, making the Microsoft machine 3.55% smaller.?

According to Temple, Microsoft underscored the mistake by including the following line of copy beneath the side-by-side demonstration:?"the ASUS VivoTab Smart is lighter than the iPad, has a bigger touchscreen...".?

Microsoft updated its website 13 hours after the blogger pointed out the disparity, Temple says, and Business Insider has thus not been not able to verify Temple's information.
