The interns over at the Weather Channel seem to be having a whirlwind of a time.

To celebrate Tornado Week, the Weather Channel has placed its interns into an indoor Twitter-powered tornado. The winds are sustained by Twitter mentions of the hashtag #TornadoWeek and will ?increase to ?a full-blown EF-5 tornado,? or somewhere above 200 mph, inside the Weather Channel offices ?if the number of public mentions reaches 1,000,000, according to the Weather Channel website.

Don?t worry, though, this isn?t a form of hazing. The Weather Channel says putting the interns? desk in a high-powered windstorm was actually the interns? ?idea. Talk about taking an active interest in your work ?

The Weather Channel is live-streaming the whole event from now until 8 p.m. Friday, May 3, ?and the interns are available to chat at the Twitter handle @TornadoWeek.

Tuesday afternoon, the Effective Wind Speed (EWS) in the Weather Channel offices was up to 120 mph, but as more #TornadoWeek tweets come in, the number of fans and force ?of the winds will increase.

And it?s not just the interns. ?The whole staff at the Weather Channel seems to be getting involved. Here?s a tweet from anchor Maria LaRosa:

Worried about the dangers involved in re-creating a 200 mph tornado in an office? Don?t be.

?Our legal team would certainly not allow us to create actual 200 mph winds within our offices. Instead we are trying to re-create the ?feeling? of these wind speeds by close proximity placement of the fans to the interns,? a Weather Channel spokesperson told ABC News.

Check out the live stream below while it?s still up and keep the #TornadoWeek tweets coming.

Moody?s downgraded J.C. Penney?s debt rating deeper into junk status

Moody?s Investors Service on Tuesday lowered the credit ratings it assigns to J.C. Penney?s debt, which were already below investment grade.

Moody?s analyst Margaret M. Taylor said while Penney?s new $1.75 billion term loan will bolster the company?s liquidity ?it will not solve Penney?s longer term performance concerns nor reduce the level of anticipated cash burn at J.C. Penney over the next twelve months.?

?The downgrade acknowledges that the term loan will greatly weaken J.C. Penney?s capital structure at a time when its earnings are at precarious levels,? Taylor said. ?The downgrade reflects Moody?s opinion that the position of the existing bondholders has been weakened by the addition of further secured debt ahead of the unsecured notes.?

Earlier today Fitch Ratings rated the new debt three steps below investment grade.

'Iron Man 3' rules world, 'Pain & Gain' takes US

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? "Iron Man 3" is the heavy-lifter at theaters with a colossal overseas debut that overshadows a sleepy pre-summer weekend at the domestic box office.

The superhero sequel starring Robert Downey Jr. got a head-start on its domestic launch next Friday with a $195.3 million opening in 42 overseas markets.

Sunday studio estimates show director Michael Bay's true-crime tale "Pain & Gain" muscled into first-place domestically with a $20 million debut.

The movie starring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie knocked off Tom Cruise's sci-fi adventure "Oblivion" after a week in the No. 1 spot. "Oblivion" slipped to second-place with $17.4 million, raising its domestic total to $64.7 million.

It's More Fun to Travel in the Philippines: Backpackers Adventure in ...

We call ourselves the packers!?

Well, you know what we mean.?

Our group's name ?started from my name in my FB fan page (Smart Backpacker). And we just started calling ourselves "the packers!" We started our first travel in Puerto Galera, Mindoro. But the name started in Sagada. Now, we continued our travel to Tablas, Romblon!

We had 4 choices for our summer escapade, namely: Caramoan, Palaui Island, Baler and Tablas, Romblon. Originally, Tablas was not part of the choices. I suggested it after I went to Romblon.

We started our online voting on where we are suppose to go and it turned out that the last choice would we be the group's choice.

And so, I booked our group in 2GO Travel and everything went well as planned.

We missed 2 of our packers, Jonas and MJ!

April 19, 2013
Terminal 3, Batangas Port
9:00 pm
Day 1

There were only 8 of us that night when we boarded the ferry travel to Odiongan, Romblon. The packers present were Nikko, Jen, Feng, Lester, Ces, Dave, Joyce and I.

The economy ticket costs P815.00. The travel to Odiongan was good for 7 hours and while onboard the vessel, we decided to have a bit of drinking spree to start our trip right!

Day 2

We arrived at the Odiongan Port around 4 am and the beauty of the port captured my excitement already. I told myself, "We are going to have a good time here!"

From the port, we were fetched by the owner of the resort (Mr. Willy) and we paid P1,000 for the van. The trip to the resort is 30 minutes or 17 kilometers.

And finally, we arrived at the Binukot Sunset Cove Resort located in Brgy. Bunsoran, Ferrol, Tablas, Romblon. The owners of the resort are Mr. Willy (an Australian) and Ms. Michaela (a Filipina) (Contact nos. 0929-787-5486 / 0999-423-1040)?

And we rented this house for only P2,500. The house was good only for 5 persons but we told the owner that we were 8 and the Ms. Mica agreed to allow us to have the house and even gave us extra beds for free!

After taking our early breakfast, we decided to trek the beach and explored its wonders!

The place is actually a cove. And at the end of the cove, there is a small island. And we gathered seashells and stones as our souvenir.

The place is what we call a Paradise!

We walked up to the end of the cove and wandered around not minding of the time.

The place was simply beyond our expectations! And our smiles were written all over our faces...

We were having a god time! Probably, one of the best times of our lives!

And here we are in a paradise called Binukot Beach!

??
Time simply flew.. And we were there at the beach.. Laughing and enjoying!

The place was so beautiful that we could not stop taking pictures!

We were there posing from one spot to another.

And as always, I was the one tasked to take our pictures. I mean why should it always be me??

Coz, I simply love them and I wanted to have them to have a good time! =)

Around 11 am, we decided to go to the other side of the cove and we discovered a smaller cove!

What a treat for us! Two coves in one resort.

The smaller cove

from Joyce Recampo

We attempted to have jumpshots at the cove and this was the only one better after so many takes that was near to perfection.

Past 2 pm, we chartered the van of Mr. Willy and headed to Mablaran Falls. We paid only P1,500 for the van. The trip going to the falls from Binukot Beach was almost 1 hour.

Falls No. 1

I will never forget this trek to the falls!

Only Nikko, Lester and I decided to go to the second falls. From the first falls to second falls, it took us 20 minutes to reach the second falls. And the trail was rugged and slippery. ?In fact, I lost my footing and everything (including my cameras and phones) got wet!

After almost 2 hours of staying at the falls, we decided to go back. We did not want to miss the reason why the resort was called Binukot Sunset Cove Resort!

Day 3

We woke up early the following morning after our late night drinking spree. My head was killing me that day (case of serious hangover!). But I did not want to spoil the fun! I pretended to be alright.. We took our early breakfast and proceeded to our next destination. Today is island hopping day!! =)

We rented four habal-habal (single motorcycle) and from Bunsoran, Ferrol to Looc we were cruising around Tablas, Romblon. ?Everyone was happy that day! We paid P300/pax for the roundtrip ride. Our guide and contact person for the tour was Jun - (0906-181-2627)

We rented a boat for P6,000 for our island hopping adventure. The owner of the boat is Mang Nonobi (0935-912-1619). After 1.5 hours of boat ride, we arrived at our destination - Carabao Island!

Carabao Island is one of the best islands I have seen in the Philippines.

We were told that Boracay was just 45 minutes away from Carabao Island and could not simply refuse the temptation. And we also decided to go to Boracay. We paid an additional of P1,500 for the sidetrip.

It was my fourth time to see Boracay. But the beauty of the island still dazzled me. After cruising in Boracay for 20 minutes. We decided to go back to Looc. Along the way, we were playing our favorite game. And as always, Lester was the usual winner! Hooray for Lester!

Around 5 pm, we boarded the Montenegro ship back to Batangas Port. We were again all smiles while we were boarding the ship...

It's Really More Fun in Tablas, Romblon!

Algeria president in France for tests after minor stroke

By Lamine Chikhi

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika was transferred to France for medical tests on Saturday night after suffering a minor stroke, Algeria's official news agency said.

Bouteflika, who has ruled over the North African oil and gas producer for more than a decade, had an "transient ischemic attack" or mini-stroke on Saturday but his condition was not serious, the APS agency said, quoting the prime minister.

The 76-year-old is part of an older generation of leaders who have dominated politics in a country that supplies a fifth of Europe's gas imports and cooperates with the West in combating Islamist militancy.

He has rarely appeared in public in recent months, prompting speculation about his health.

"The president felt unwell and he has been hospitalised but his condition is not serious at all," Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal was quoted as saying by APS.

The president was then moved to France, on the recommendation of his doctors.

Bouteflika and other members of Algeria's elite have controlled Algeria since it won independence from France in a 1954-62 war.

In the early 1990s, the military-backed politicians overturned an election which Islamists were poised to win and then fought a conflict with them in which about 200,000 people were killed.

They also saw off the challenge of Arab Spring protests two years ago, with Bouteflika's government defusing unrest through pay rises and free loans for young people.

Bouteflika has served three terms as president of the OPEC member and is thought unlikely to seek a fourth at an election due in 2014.

U.S. diplomatic cables leaked in 2011 said Bouteflika had been suffering from cancer but it was in remission.

More than 70 percent of Algerians are under 30. About 21 percent of young people are unemployed, the International Monetary Fund says, and many are impatient with the gerontocracy ruling a country where jobs, wages and housing are urgent concerns.

A transient ischemic attack is a temporary blockage in a blood vessel to the brain. it typically lasts for less than five minutes and "usually causes no permanent injury to the brain", the American Stroke Association said on its website.

The attacks should be seen as a warning as a third of people who experience them go on to have a full stroke within a year, the organisation added. (Reporting by Lamine Chikhi; Editing by Andrew Heavens)

Group: Sudan army supporting fugitive warlord Kony

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? The fugitive African warlord Joseph Kony recently found safe haven in territory controlled by Sudan, a watchdog group said Friday, accusing the Sudanese military of offering aid to commanders of the Lord's Resistance Army.

The U.S.-based group Resolve said in a new report that Kony recently directed killings from an enclave protected by the Sudanese military. Until early this year, according to the report, Kony and some of his commanders were operating in Kafia Kingi, a disputed area along the Sudan-South Sudan border where African Union troops tasked with catching Kony don't have access.

"The enclave is currently controlled by Sudan, and numerous eyewitness reports indicate that elements of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in Kafia Kingi have actively sheltered senior LRA commanders there and provided them with limited material support," the report said. "According to LRA defectors and other sources, LRA leader Joseph Kony himself first traveled to the Kafia Kingi enclave in 2010. He returned to Kafia Kingi in 2011 and was present there throughout parts of 2012."

In a series of makeshift camps near a Sudanese army barracks, Kony "continued to direct LRA attacks against civilians in neighboring countries and issue new orders for LRA fighters."

The Ugandan military ? with support from U.S. military advisers ? is the driving force behind the hunt for Kony. Ugandan army spokesman Col. Felix Kulayigye said the report vindicates Uganda's contention that the LRA is a beneficiary of Sudanese support. Ugandan army officials said late last year they believed Kony was hiding in Sudan-controlled territory, although now they believe he has moved elsewhere.

"We always knew Kony was hiding in Kafia Kingi," he said. "The way forward is that no country should be hiding a wanted criminal."

Kony watchdog groups are concerned that Kony can retreat to Kafia Kingi whenever his pursuers get close. Resolve said it has satellite imagery of the now-abandoned camp where Kony was reportedly seen in late 2012. The warlord is no longer believed to be hiding there, the report noted, saying he may have crossed to Central African Republic.

Sudan has consistently denied charges it supports Kony, a warlord wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Sudan's army spokesman Sawarmy Khaled denied reports on Friday that his country has provided shelter or refuge to Kony.

"The report is baseless and rejected. The Sudanese army has no renegade leaders. It is a united army and has no place for individual acts," he told the official state news agency SUNA. "The Sudanese army has no interest in adopting or sheltering rebels from other countries."

The United States government is evaluating the report that the LRA is operating in the Kafia Kingi region, said State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell Friday.

"The U.S. and the international community as a whole would take very seriously any credible evidence of support or safe haven being provided to the LRA," said Ventrell, citing a December statement at the U.N. expressing concern about the LRA's possible presence in Kafia Kingi.

"We continue to discuss our concerns about the whereabouts of Joseph Kony with all governments in the region, including with the government of Sudan, and we have encouraged Sudan to cooperate with regional efforts to counter the LRA," Ventrell added. "We're in a position now where two of the top five commanders are gone, the number of people killed by the LRA has gone down by 66 percent, and defections continue. So our pressure on the LRA continues."

Kony's LRA, which originated in Uganda in the 1980s as a popular tribal uprising against the government, has become notorious for recruiting children as fighters and forcing girls to be sex slaves. Military pressure forced the LRA out of Uganda in 2005, and the rebels scattered across parts of central Africa. LRA fighters are now believed to be operating mainly in the jungles of Congo and Central African Republic.

Ugandan Brig. Dick Olum, the top commander of African forces hunting for Kony, recently said he believed Kony had crossed to Central African Republic, where last month rebels deposed a president and expressed hostility toward foreign troops operating in the country. The lack of cooperation from the new government there forced the African Union to suspend military operations against Kony, who over the years has taken advantage of porous borders and weak governments to regroup.

The LRA is vastly diminished from previous years, and its forces now don't exceed 500, according Brig. Olum. Many of Kony's fighters have defected in the past year, and some of his top lieutenants have been captured or killed in combat. Last year an LRA commander believed to be Kony's military strategist was seized by Ugandan troops.

Sudan's support for Kony threatens progress made against the LRA, said the new report by Resolve.

"Unless addressed, it will also enable LRA leaders to outlast current counter-LRA operations," the report said. "Though international diplomats and military officials working to stop LRA attacks privately acknowledge recent LRA movement in Kafia Kingi, they have not adopted realistic strategies to prevent further support from Sudan to Kony's forces."

TSX slides as mining, energy issues stumble

By Solarina Ho

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock market finished lower on Friday as natural resource stocks slumped and market sentiment soured following U.S. economic growth data that fell short of expectations.

U.S. gross domestic product expanded at a 2.5 percent rate, an increase from the fourth quarter's dismal 0.4 percent pace but shy of the 3 percent growth analysts were hoping for. The weaker-than-expected data in Canada's biggest trading partner weighed on Canadian stocks.

The overall materials group, home to mining companies, gave back 3.1 percent, while the energy group fell 1.1 percent. Together, the two resource sectors make up some 40 percent of the index's weight.

Goldcorp Inc had the biggest negative drag on the index with its 4.2 percent slide to C$29.29. Barrick Gold Corp , which reported lower quarterly profits this week, was down 3.3 percent at C$18.81. Base metal mining company First Quantum Minerals Ltd plunged 7.4 percent to C$16.67.

The price of gold, which posted its biggest weekly gain in three months, finished lower as investors took profits ahead of the three-day May Day holiday in China. China is the second-largest gold consumer after India.

Copper prices retreated on the disappointing U.S. data, following two days of gains.

"A lot of Asia's closed next week, so all the gold guys got nervous again today," said Paul Hand, managing director at RBC Capital Markets, who also noted the "outsized influence" commodities had on the Canadian stock market.

"I think if you look at the broad mood of the investors in Canada, the underperformance of the index this year versus the U.S. and/or some of the global markets is really quite evident."

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> closed down 109.31 points, or 0.9 percent, at 12,220.20. The index advanced 1.3 percent for the week.

Eight of the index's 10 key sectors were mired in negative territory.

Canadian Natural Resources slipped 2.1 percent to C$29.58. Oil prices were pressured by caution over the tepid growth outlook for the world's two largest oil consumers, the United States and China.

"We seem to be in a euphoria and then reality sets in and the fact is, the commodities continue to be top of mind. Even though they've recovered ... they can't gain any traction or momentum or any investor favor," said Barry Schwartz, vice president and portfolio manager at Baskin Financial Services.

"No question the market wants to see higher commodity prices and see them sustained at a higher level, until they get back in."

Schwartz said prices of commodity stocks have disconnected from the underlying commodities they sell.

"You can't force people to buy them, but some of the valuations are starting to look very, very attractive," he added.

The financial subindex, which make up just over 30 percent of the main index's weight, was down 0.3 percent, led by Royal Bank of Canada , which was down 0.8 percent, at C$60.02.

In corporate results, Transcanada Corp , Canada's No. 2 pipeline company, reported higher quarterly earnings and said the long wait for U.S. government approval of its controversial Keystone XL project will further delay completion of the pipeline and push its cost above the company's $5.3 billion estimate. Shares fell 1.3 percent to C$49.14.

New drug stimulates immune system to kill infected cells in animal model of hepatitis B infection

Apr. 26, 2013 ? A novel drug developed by Gilead Sciences and tested in an animal model at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio suppresses hepatitis B virus infection by stimulating the immune system and inducing loss of infected cells.

In a study conducted at Texas Biomed's Southwest National Primate Research Center, researchers found that the immune modulator GS-9620, which targets a receptor on immune cells, reduced both the virus levels and the number of infected liver cells in chimpanzees chronically infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV). Chimpanzees are the only species other than humans that can be infected by HBV. Therefore, the results from this study were critical in moving the drug forward to human clinical trials which are now in progress.

The new report, co-authored by scientists from Texas Biomed and Gilead Sciences, appears in the May issue of Gastroenterology. Gilead researchers had previously demonstrated that the same therapy could induce a cure of hepatitis infection in woodchucks that were chronically infected with a virus similar to human HBV.

"This is an important proof-of-concept study demonstrating that the therapy stimulates the immune system to suppress the virus and eliminate infected liver cells," said co-author Robert E. Lanford, Ph.D., of Texas Biomed. "One of the key observations was that the therapy continued to suppress virus levels for months after therapy was stopped.

The current therapy for HBV infection targets the virus and works very well at suppressing viral replication and delaying progression of liver disease, but it is a lifelong therapy that does not provide a cure.

"This GS-9620 therapy represents the first conceptually new treatment for HBV in more than a decade, and combining it with the existing antiviral therapy could be transformative in dealing with this disease," stated Lanford.

The Gilead drug binds a receptor called Toll-Like Receptor 7 that is present in immune cells. The receptor normally recognizes invading viruses and triggers the immune system to suppress viral replication by the innate immune response and kill infected cells by the adaptive immune response, thus orchestrating both arms of the immune system.

HBV damages the liver, leading to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer worldwide and the third most common cause of cancer death. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), up to 1.4 million Americans are chronically infected with HBV.

The World Health Organization estimates that two billion people have been infected with the hepatitis B virus, resulting in more than 240 million people with chronic infections and 620,000 deaths every year.

Movie review: The Company You Keep | canada.com

The Company You Keep

Two and a half stars out of five

Starring: Robert Redford, Shia Labeouf, Susan Sarandon, Julie Christie, Stanley Tucci, Terrence Howard and Anna Kendrick

Directed by: Robert Redford

Running time: 121 minutes

Parental Guidance: coarse language, violence

No matter how much slack you cut it, The Company You Keep never quite lives up to expectation.

It?s a faintly tragic realization given how much talent was floating above the line in this new movie from smarty-pants Robert Redford, but then again its central flaw as a film echoes the core disappointment lying at the heart of the content.

Based on the novel by Neil Gordon, The Company You Keep deals with the lasting legacy of boomer idealism as it tells the fictionalized story of the real life Weather Underground, a radical group born from the anti-war movement in the 1960s.

Desperate to change the agenda and ?bring the war home,? the ?Weathermen? set off bombs, accidentally blew themselves up, and were indirectly connected to a bank robbery that left several dead.

Some were convicted of crimes. Yet many members of the group simply fell off the grid and disappeared, which is where The Company You Keep begins: Longtime fugitive Sharon Solarz (Susan Sarandon) decides she?s done enough hiding and turns herself in to the authorities more than three decades after the fact.

Shortly afterwards we?re introduced to Jim Grant (Robert Redford), a single dad and lawyer with a significant secret.

The connection between the two is sketchy, which is where the ever-convenient reporter character (Shia LaBeouf) steps in to explain the facts in the form of a frustrated tirade to the predictably fed up, forever threatening editor (Stanley Tucci).

The dialogue surrounding violent protest got a lot narrower in the past month, which means a lot of the talking points in Redford?s movie feel moot.

Thanks to these genteel nods to the nostalgia of His Girl Friday, within 15 minutes of the head credits, we know the basic outlines of the story: Jim Grant is actually Nick Sloan, another member of the WU who eluded prosecution.

Nick goes on the lam to protect his young daughter, but he?s really trying to reach Mimi Lurie (Julie Christie), another fugitive from justice who could vindicate him on all charges, should she choose to co-operate.

Unlike other members of the group, Mimi is still a fierce believer in her ideals. She still wants to blow the whistle, and she still wants to blow stuff up.

Now, given the precise moment in time this movie is being released to a mass audience, there isn?t going to be a whole lot of empathy for these homegrown ?terrorists? ? even if they?re being played by generational icons such as Sarandon, Redford, Christie and the ever-hunky Sam Elliott.

The dialogue surrounding violent protest got a lot narrower in the past month, which means a lot of the talking points in Redford?s movie feel moot.

Redford no doubt wanted his audience to question issues of moral obligation and social responsibility. He wanted us to feel the friction point between what is and what could be, and he wanted to do it in a way that felt direct, emotional and poignant.

As a result, one never gets a sense of undeclared judgment. Every character is given a wide berth of emotion and motivation, and everyone remains somewhat sympathetic over the course of the chatty denouement that never quite locks into thriller gear.

This is good for the Socratic side of the movie, but it sucks away at the entertainment value because without judgment and a sense of moral traction, the underlying dramatic engine keeps spinning its wheels without going anywhere.

In the rare moments where the movie finds its teeth, it does extremely well, such as the climactic exchange between Christie and Redford ? the only two actors in the whole piece who find any palpable dynamic.

In the rare moments where the movie finds its teeth, it does extremely well.

Christie?s character looks at her old friend and sees only the chalk mark of his former self. She thinks he?s grown soft, and sacrificed his ideals for a comfortable life. He counters her self-righteous speech by saying simply: ?I grew up.?

This one scene encapsulates the whole diorama of theme: Is radical idealism a quaint memory of a bygone era, or is it possible to be an effective tool of social change while still obeying the codes of the status quo?

They are good questions, but the movie cannot answer them with any conviction because it?s so liberal in its tone, it takes everyone?s side.

The only character who proves easy to judge is the young journalist played by LaBeouf because he doesn?t even feel compelled to exercise morality. He only cares about advancing his own career, regardless of the harm he could inflict on others.

He?s a total tool, but the portrayal is a little too accurate to dismiss.

Redford could have done a lot more with the conflict between the aging idealist and the young, self-serving pragmatist because it reflects the chasm between generations, and as such, it?s an excellent point of entry into the whole piece.

But for all the potential, all the talent and all the good intentions bubbling beneath this Vancouver-spun production, The Company You Keep suffers a similar fate as the boomers it depicts and leaves a lingering sense of unfulfilled promise.

5 Big Brand PPC Ads with Critiques: What We Like, What We'd ...

What big brands are able to do with their enormous marketing budgets is inspiring ? though sometimes it mostly inspires jealousy. The typical small business can?t sponsor the Olympics or get an ad spot during the Super Bowl. You have to tinker around with more accessible campaigns that cost less but typically have smaller reach as well.

PPC is an example of an incredibly accessible marketing channel ? it?s being exploited by tiny one-man shops and huge multinational corporations alike. But how much better is a big-brand PPC ad than an SMB ad ? if at all? Is it like comparing the latest Pepsi commercial to what your local furniture store puts together?

Let?s look at five big-brand AdWords ads and see what they do well and what they could do better.

(More: Dear eBay, Your Ads Don't Work Because They Suck)

By the way, I fully admit to stealing the format for this post from Oli Gardner at Unbounce, who recently did something similar with big-brand landing pages. Thanks, Oli!

Big-Brand PPC Ad #1: LightingDirect.com

PPC Ad Example

A Google search for ?chandeliers? turned up these three ads in the coveted top-of-page ad spots. Let?s focus on the middle ad from LightingDirect.com (a Build.com network site), comparing it to its close competition.

What I Like:

 • Seller Ratings ? Both LightingDirect.com and LampsPlus are making use of the seller ratings extension available in AdWords. This helps them stand out a little more from the top-ranked ad. It?s working to the second ad?s advantage in particular because the company has over twice as many reviews as the third ad.
 • Lots of Benefits ? This ad manages to pack four different benefits (free shipping, easy returns, great selection, and friendly service) into a small amount of space. The other two ads only include two benefits in their message.

What I?d Change/Test:

 • Punctuation ? Putting punctuation at the end of the first line of descriptive text (a comma or period after ?Easy Returns?) would have made this ad easier to read, since top-ranked ads often find their two description lines expanded into a single long line. They could probably also increase CTR by including an exclamation point.
 • Call to Action ? There?s no explicit call to action in this ad. (The first ad makes the same mistake; the third ad has the ?Subscribe to newsletter? button to entice an action.) I might try losing one of those four benefits and turning one of the benefits into a CTA ? for example, ?Claim Your Free Shipping Offer? or ?Check Out Our Great Selection.?

Big-Brand PPC Ad #2: Audi

Brand Search PPC Ad

Unsurprisingly, Audi owns the top spot for a search on ?Audi.? (And yes, we think even small businesses should bid on branded terms.) So what are they doing with the prime real estate?

What I Like:

 • Sitelinks ? Sitelinks are an easy win: They make your ad bigger and give users many more places to click. In fact they increase CTR even when users aren't clicking the sitelines themselves, meaning you get a lift on the main headline link too.
 • Verbs ? Audi isn?t missing a call to action like LightingDirect was ? in fact, the main description line as well as every single sitelink includes a verb, enticing the searcher to take action.
 • Social Extensions ? Audi has an insane number of followers on Google+, so they?re right to show that number off. (According to Google: ?On average, search ads with annotations have a 5-10% uplift in click through rate and the AdWords Social Extension helps you show more of them.?)

What I?d Change/Test:

 • Headline ? Since this is the top result on a brand search, it probably has a super-duper high CTR, but nonetheless, I think the headline could be doing more work. All it really tells us is that this is the official site. Compare to this BMW ad that also tells us we can use the official site to build our own car.

Top Ranked PPC Ad

Big-Brand PPC Ad #3: Olay

Branded AdWords Ad

I know some of you dudes out there are thinking ?What the %^&$ is BB cream?? Basically, it?s like gussied up tinted moisturizer ? which is like a sheer foundation ? never mind. The point is, it?s makeup, and you can buy it. Let?s take a look at the Olay ad and the other competition in the yellow box.

What I Like:

 • Use of Symbols ? Did you know that using symbols, like the registered trademark symbol, can boost your ad performance? Test this now! They?re also using that powerful exclamation point.
 • Offers ? I like the specific offers in the sitelinks, especially ?Get a Free Skin Consultation,? which sounds like a great lead builder.

What I?d Change/Test:

 • Shorter Headline ? The headline is too long so it gets truncated. Instantly what? We don?t know.
 • Longer Description ? On the other hand, the description line is throwing away its extra characters, space that could have been used for a call to action (Maybelline?s CTA in the third ad is awesome) or to repeat the keyword (?BB Cream?) in the text again. Remember, when the search query appears in your ad, it appears in bold face, so your ad stands out more.

Big-Brand PPC Ad #4: ULINE

Bad PPC Ads

ULINE is one of the top PPC spenders in the business and industrial category, spending over $35 million a year on AdWords advertising. Are they making the most of that big PPC budget?

What I Like:

???? <crickets> ????

I don?t like much about this ad. Let?s get to what I don?t like.

What I?d Change/Test:

 • Better Keyword Matching ? It looks like they?re broad-matching on ?labels,? but they?re not using dynamic keyword insertion (DKI), so the word ?printing? doesn?t actually appear in the ad ? not a great intent match. The ad is all about designing and customizing labels, not printing them. They should be keeping a better watch over their search query report and building out more targeted ad groups.
 • More Benefits ? The only benefit here is ?Over 27,500 Products? ? which, some might argue, is actually a shortcoming. Who wants to search through nearly 30,000 products? Paradox of choice, anyone? Sounds like a waste of time. Compare this to the other two ads, which offer lots of information on price and specific details about label sizes and other information that would help the searcher make a decision.
 • Ad Extensions ? ULINE?s ad doesn?t make use of any extensions at all. Can we get a sitelink up in this piece?

Since ULINE?s ad is relatively weak compared to the #2 and #3 ads, they?re probably bidding higher and paying a lot more than their competitors per click.

Big-Brand PPC Ad #5: SelectQuote

PPC Ad Text Help

Here?s an ad that follows a lot of the best practices we?ve already mentioned ? clear call to action, using the search query in the text, sitelinks, etc. What are they doing that?s new?

What I Like:

 • The Local Connection ? SelectQuote has localized their ad to recognize my location. I?m in Colorado, so I might want to deal with a local agent.
 • Communication Extension ? Including a phone number means that your ad could lead to conversions even if they don?t click the ad. (That means it?s free, yay!)

What I?d Change/Test:

 • Numbers ? The top-ranked Metlife ad gets specific with numbers: ?Pay as little as $1/day for up to $500,000 coverage.? If I were SelectQuote?s PPC manager I?d test out concrete dollar amounts in my text too.
 • Appeal to Emotions ? People looking for life insurance might be driven by some strong emotions ? fear, compassion, concern for one?s loved ones, etc. An ad that speaks to those emotions could really do well here. I?d test something like ?Take Care of Your Family. Get a Free Quote Today.?

Do you steal from the big boys when it comes to writing ad text? Or do the little guys do it better?

After hospital, where will Boston bombing suspect go?

FBI via Reuters

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center now. The feds will have to figure out where he goes next while awaiting trial.

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been hospitalized since his arrest, but if his condition continues to improve he will soon experience the hospitality of a high-security lockup while waiting for a trial that could be two years away, experts say.

"As soon as he is medically cleared, he'll be moved," said Steven Swensen, a former U.S. marshal who now runs a judicial security consulting firm. "This is a high-threat, high-profile situation."

Tsarnaev's condition improved from serious to fair on Tuesday. But his injuries -- including a gunshot wound to the head and neck that could be self-inflicted -- were so severe he initially communicated with investigators in writing.

The hospital and FBI have not released details of his treatment at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he was under heavy guard, or given any hint of when he might be released.

Video from a restaurant surveillance camera shows Dzhokhar Tsarnaev walking toward the scene of the second bombing and slipping his backpack off, investigators say. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

When it happens, the U.S. marshals and federal prosecutors will have to weigh distance from the courthouse against security and medical needs in choosing a new temporary home for the suspect.

Federal prisoners are sometimes sent to the Plymouth County Jail, which can handle high-risk prisoners but does not have extensive medical facilities. The state's Shattuck Hospital has a jail unit and is only about 20 minutes from the courthouse.

Further afield, there's the Wyatt Detention Center in Central Falls, R.I., a privately run maximum-security federal detention facility less than an hour's drive Boston, or the federal prison hospital at Fort Devens in Harvard, Mass.

If it's Wyatt, Tsarnaev would be far from the first high-value prisoner locked up there. Rezwan Ferdus, who pleaded guilty to trying to fly bomb-laden model aircraft into the Capitol and the Pentagon, spent 399 days in solitary confinement at the facility before he was sentenced.

But the 771-inmate center has just four hospital beds, according to its annual report, and it became the subject of controversy in 2008 when an immigration detainee died of advanced cancer and the feds found he had been neglected.

Devens is a medical facility but doesn't typically house suspects before sentencing. The Bureau of Prisons said it can handle detainees of any security-risk level, but it's also about an hour from Boston.

Wherever he ends up, experts said, Tsarnaev will likely be subject to special administrative measures that could sharply curtail his contact with fellow prisoners and the outside world.

Elise Amendola / AP file

Devens Federal Medical Center is seen in Devens, Mass., in December 2011.

Stephen Huggard, a former Boston federal prosecutor who worked on the 9/11 investigation, said Tsarnaev's parents, who are in Russia and have insisted he's being framed, may not even be allowed to visit.

How long the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth student spends in a local lockup depends in large part on whether prosecutors decide to seek the death penalty -- a decision that is months away and will ultimately be made by Attorney General Eric Holder.

If the marathon bombing becomes a capital case, it could be "a couple a years" before a jury decides his fate, Huggard said.

Tsarnaev, 19, hasn't even been arraigned yet.

He nodded answers to a few questions at a cut-and-dried initial appearance before a magistrate in his hospital bed after being charged with one count of using a weapon of mass destruction and a second count of malicious use of an explosive.

The next step is for a grand jury to vote on an indictment. Technically, prosecutors have 30 days to get that done, but legal experts agree the deadline is likely to waived by both sides while they continue to investigate.

The suspect's next court date, May 30, would then be a status hearing, and he would not be arraigned until the indictment -- which could contain more charges and evidence than the criminal complaint signed this week -- is issued.

"There is no reason to rush at this point," said Dan Collins, a former federal prosecutor in Minnesota who worked on the Mumbai bombing case.

Tsarnaev has been assigned three federal public defenders who are likely, given what legal analysts describe as overwhelming evidence, to open discussions about a plea deal that would keep their client off death row at the "supermax" prison in Terre Haute, Ind.

"It wouldn't shock me if this ends in a plea," Huggard said.

"This is a kid, and as heinous as his acts are, he acted atypically for what we would expect for a terrorist," he said, noting that Tsarnaev was back at school and the gym after the bombing and before the bloody rampage that led to his arrest.

"Does it mean he didn't fully comprehend what he was doing? That's going to get explored by both sides."

But Huggard added that if Tsarnaev was telling the truth when he reportedly told investigators he and his older brother Tamerlan were lone actors and not sponsored or deployed by a terrorist cabal, it may make it harder to get the death penalty off the table.

"Then he has nothing to offer," he said. "Then he's just a guy who decided he wanted to blow up America."

Can Apple stay on top? Investors, suppliers question its future.

Projections continue to suggest negative results for Apple, but what is preventing Apple from dominating the market like it used to?

By Steph Solis / April 23, 2013

A man looks at his Apple iPad in front an Apple logo outside an Apple store in downtown Shanghai. Apple's luster is diminishing as it continues to lose market share to its competitors and face criticism from investors and suppliers.

As Apple continues to face growing competition, the company's allure is starting to fade in the eyes of investors and suppliers, according to new report from?Reuters. Meanwhile, the once dominant tech giant is losing market share as Samsung and other rivals continue to grow.?

The concerns of shareholders apparently range from worries about smaller shipments to criticisms that the company has lost its innovative edge since iconic co-founder Steve Jobs died a year and a half ago.

Asian suppliers have told Reuters that they are trying to become less dependent on Apple as they encountered delays on deadlines from the company.

For the first time since December 2011, Apple?s stock closed last week below $400.

Apple will hold its financial conference call on quarterly results Tuesday afternoon. While Apple is still expected to show growth ? estimates of quarterly revenue currently circle $42.77 billion ? the projection is that Apple may be moving downward, Dan Moren of MacWorld reports.

"Apple is in some ways a sort of victim of its own success, especially when the term innovation starts being thrown around," says?Charles Golvin, a principal analyst at Forrester Research. In other words, Apple, which?has introduced multiple revolutionary products in the past, is under fire for not bringing an entirely different product to the market recently ? or at least fast enough.

What seems to be preventing Apple from owning the market is its pricing for smart phones, Golvin says. Apple could benefit from having a range of smart phone prices, similar to the range of options that were available for the iPod.?

Another possible issue is Apple?s pattern of releasing new products every year, some of which had relatively minor adjustments. Golvin notes that it seems to be harder for Apple to continue that trend with Samsung and other competitors releasing products more often.

John Koetsier of VentureBeat expressed similar concerns with Apple?s dominance in the market in December. He emphasizes the need for a change in Apple?s market strategy, including more aggressive pricing, if the company expects to stay on top.?

He notes that while Apple has helped innovate the computer and electronics industry, they need to "fill available niches in the new ecosystem" to compete with rivals like Google and Samsung.?

The company is at risk of falling back into the lull it saw in the late 20th century, according to Mr. Koetsier. "The problem for Apple, if the current sales and market trends continue, is that iOS will get less and less important, relatively speaking," Koetsier said. "And those massive profits will start to wither away, start to follow the leaders ? the new leaders ? and we?ll be back to the 90s."?

Drinking one 12-ounce sugar-sweetened soft drink a day can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes by 22 percent, study suggests

Apr. 24, 2013 ? Drinking one (or one extra)* 12oz serving size of sugar-sweetened soft drink a day can be enough to increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 22%, a new study suggests. The research is published in Diabetologia (the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes) and comes from data in the InterAct consortium**.

The research is by Dr Dora Romaguera, Dr Petra Wark and Dr Teresa Norat, Imperial College London, UK, and colleagues.

Since most research in this area has been conducted in North American populations, the authors wanted to establish if a link between sweet beverage consumption and type 2 diabetes existed in Europe. They used data on consumption of juices and nectars, sugar-sweetened soft drinks and artificially sweetened soft drinks collected across eight European cohorts participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC study; UK, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Sweden, France, Italy, Netherlands)***, covering some 350,000 participants.

As part of the InterAct project, the researchers did a study which included 12,403 type 2 diabetes cases and a random sub-cohort of 16,154 identified within EPIC. The researchers found that, after adjusting for confounding factors, consumption of one 12oz (336ml) serving size of sugar-sweetened soft drink per day increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 22%. This increased risk fell slightly to 18% when total energy intake and body-mass index (BMI) were accounted for**** (both factors that are thought to mediate the association between sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption and diabetes incidence). This could indicate that the effect of sugar-sweetened soft drink on diabetes goes beyond its effect on body weight.

The authors also observed a statistically significant increase in type 2 diabetes incidence related to artificially sweetened soft drink consumption, however this significant association disappeared after taking into account the BMI of participants; this probably indicates that the association was not causal but driven by the weight of participants (i.e. participants with a higher body weight tend to report higher consumption of artificially sweetened drinks, and are also more likely to develop diabetes). Pure fruit juice and nectar***** consumption was not significantly associated with diabetes incidence, however it was not possible using the data available to study separately the effect of 100% pure juices from those with added sugars.

The authors say the increased risk of diabetes among sugar-sweetened soft drink consumers in Europe is similar to that found in a meta-analysis of previous studies conducted mostly in North America (that found a 25% increased risk of type 2 diabetes associated with one 12 oz daily increment of sugar-sweetened beverage consumption).

Dr Romaguera concludes: "Given the increase in sweet beverage consumption in Europe, clear messages on the unhealthy effect of these drinks should be given to the population."

Notes

*The increased risk of 22% is for each extra 12oz sugar sweetened drink, so would apply to someone who had 1 drink versus someone who had 0, or someone who had 2 drinks versus someone who had 1, etc.

**The InterACT consortium is investigating, among other things, nutritional factors and physical activity to study the association of nutritional, dietary and physical activity behaviours with incident diabetes in the nested case-cohort study and to contribute to the analysis of gene-lifestyle interaction. It is a sub-division of the EPIC study, which was designed to investigate the relationships between diet, nutritional status, lifestyle and environmental factors and the incidence of cancer and other chronic diseases.

***The centres involved were France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, UK (Oxford, Cambridge), Netherlands (Bilthoven, Utrecht), Germany (Heidelberg, Potsdam), Sweden (Umea, Malmo)

****Extra info from Dr Romaguera: The 22% figure is used as the top line because it is widely accepted by the scientific community that these models should not be adjusted for BMI. In the meta-analysis comparison with other studies from the USA, the risk is those studies is NOT adjusted by BMI. That makes it possible to compare the two sets of results (25% increased risk in North American studies versus 22% in Europe).

*****nectars (UK and USA definition) are fruit juices that have been diluted to some extent and may contain additives (sugar or sweeteners)

A $100 Lenovo Computer Monitor Is Your Deal of the Day

It's not too often you'll find an attractive computer monitor under $100, but that's exactly what Best Buy's got on tap for its deal of the day. Today, you can buy a 21-inch Lenovo 1080p monitor for $100. Here's what you've got to know about this monitor: Lenovo bills it as an IPS screen. If you wanted to use an HDMI input, you're out of luck. It only takes DVI and VGA inputs. And at $100 from Best Buy, it's $60 less than Amazon. At this price, I'd guess most people will pick up two.
